The Intervention Tools Chart is designed to be used by educators as a resource to locate interventions, instructional practices, and learning strategies that can be used within an RtI process. Please note: the listing of specific tools is not meant as an endorsement by the NYS RtI MS DP or the NYSED. Rather, it is up to the consumer to research selected tools for evidence of effectiveness. The chart contains three types of tools that are either free or available for purchase: commercial programs, instructional practices, and learning strategies.
Ladders to Literacy is a supplemental early literacy curriculum composed of more than 70 activities designed to develop children’s print/book awareness, metalinguistic awareness, and oral language skills. The curriculum, published in the book Ladders to Literacy: A Preschool Activity Book, Second Edition, can be used in a variety of early childhood settings and provides guidance on how teachers can adapt the activities for children with special needs.
LANGUAGE! Live is a comprehensive literacy program that combines teacher-directed learning with personalized, adaptive online instruction. The program has age-appropriate learning tools and a content focus on foundational skills - phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, spelling, word use, and sentence structure. The program has strategic entry and exit points to aid students in beginning the program at a place that best suits their needs. Instructional modifications and tools for English language learners are provided.
LANGUAGE! The Comprehensive Literacy Curriculum® is a multisensory, targeted intervention with an intensive literacy curriculum. It integrates reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, foundational skills, and spoken English. Its parallel curriculum, LANGUAGE! Focus on English Learning® is specifically designed for English learners. The program is available in both a traditional and eBook version.
Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) is a peer-tutoring program. According to the developer's website, it is designed to be incorporated into the existing curriculum with the goal of improving the academic performance of children with diverse academic needs. Students partner with peers, alternating the role of tutor while reading aloud, listening, and providing feedback in various structured activities.
Phonics for Reading is a supplementary program designed to aid students in building phonemic awareness, decoding, and fluency skills to strengthen reading comprehension. The program is systematic and utilizes explicit instruction.
Reading Mastery is an accelerated program that aims to help beginning readers identify letter sounds, segment words into sounds, blend sounds into words, develop vocabulary, and begin to learn comprehension strategies. Reading Mastery Classic consists of two levels. Reading Mastery Fast Cycle is an accelerated program that condenses Levels I and II.
Reading Mastery can be used as a supplement to a core reading program or as a stand-alone reading program for students with or without disabilities.
Road to the Code is an 11-week developmentally-sequenced program designed for teaching phonemic awareness and letter/sound correspondence.
S.P.I.R.E is an intensive reading program for non-readers and struggling readers. This multisensory program is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach.
The SIPPS program is a systematic decoding program that helps developing and struggling readers. Teachers at all grade levels can provide instruction based on student need, as determined by the SIPPS placement test. Additionally, it makes use of grade-appropriate materials.
There are three levels in the SIPPS program—Beginning and Extension Levels for grades K–3 and Challenge Level for grades 2–12. The content of Beginning and Extension Levels is covered by SIPPS Plus for grades 4–12.
When used as a developmental reading program, SIPPS is intended for kindergarteners through fourth-graders. As an intervention program, it can be used in grades 1–12.
Soar to Success: Reading is an intensive reading intervention program that uses literature, strategies, and graphic organizers to accelerate reading growth. The program offers fast- paced lessons, consistent routines, and focuses on foundational skills and reading strategies through a balance of weekly fiction and nonfiction trade books.
