The Intervention Tools Chart is designed to be used by educators as a resource to locate interventions, instructional practices, and learning strategies that can be used within an RtI process. Please note: the listing of specific tools is not meant as an endorsement by the NYS RtI MS DP or the NYSED. Rather, it is up to the consumer to research selected tools for evidence of effectiveness. The chart contains three types of tools that are either free or available for purchase: commercial programs, instructional practices, and learning strategies.
Graphosyllabic analysis is a decoding strategy that uses five steps for syllable analysis. This strategy uses one syllabication rule—the need to create a separate syllable for each vowel sound.
This program is designed for emergent readers in kindergarten and grade one and can also be used for struggling readers in grade one or two. The program materials have four parts: sound awareness (phonological/phonemic awareness), letter recognition and phonics, high frequency sight words and phrases, and stories for oral reading. This program is designed to be used one-on-one with students.
Guess the Word is an instructional practice activity that utilizes sound stretching or “snail talk” to assist students in discriminating the individual sounds in words.
Have You Ever? is an instructional practice that affords students the opportunity to associate newly learned words with contexts from their own personal experiences.
Headsprout is an adaptive, individualized online reading program for K-5 students. The program is designed to tailor its instruction to the needs and learning pace of every student. This program is designed to be used by students with a variety of reading skills at various reading levels: from non-readers and early readers to established readers already reading above their grade level.
The National Center on INTENSIVE INTERVENTION has sample lessons and activities intended to assist special education teachers, interventionists, and others working with students with intensive reading needs.
The lessons/materials are not intended to be used as an intervention, but can provide support for developing and customizing lessons to meet student needs.
An I-Chart assists students in collecting information about a given topic from multiple resources while organizing and analyzing the information. It provides students the opportunity to research and reason based on inquiry. The chart also facilitates small group or whole group discussion that deepens students’ understanding of a topic.
The Interactive Notebook strategy provides a platform for students to document their own learning and reading experiences in a notebook. They can document information about content-specific material, include drawings and charts, and organize previously completed graphic organizers. The Interactive Notebook allows students to watch his/her learning progress overtime while practicing organization and notetaking skills.
iSPIRE is an intensive reading program for non-readers and struggling readers. The program uses new technology to blend digital and teacher led instruction. The program uses continual practice and review to aid students in mastering concepts.
Just Words® is an explicit, multi sensory decoding and spelling program.
