During our annual summer institute, which is part of our middle school demonstration project, the building principal and RTI Coordinators from Iroquois Middle School talked about a variety of RTI-related topics including data-based decision making, intervention menus, logistics, and roles and responsibilities with key members from the RTI Leadership team.

The National Center on Intensive Intervention (NCII) is excited to partner with CEC’s Division for Research on two upcoming webinars focused on writing. In these webinars, presenters will share research-based strategies for improving writing through the use of data and effective instructional practices.

Writing Better: How Can Teachers Use Data to Individualize Instruction in Writing?

On October 11, 2017 from 3:00-4:00 pm ET, Drs. Kristen McMaster and Erica Lembke will present a data-based decision-making framework to individualize instruction for students with intensive needs in writing. They will describe Curriculum-Based Measures in writing, how these measures can be used for instructional decision making, and how teachers can access assessment tools for instructional decision making.

On October 26, from 3:00-4:00 pm ET, Dr. Steve Graham will share an evidence-based framework for providing effective writing instruction. This will include the presentation of a variety of techniques that teachers can use today to improve their students’ writing.

RTI/MTSS Part II: Data-Based Decision Making & Instruction/Intervention Implementation

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a school-wide, data-drive prevention model designed to maximize the impact of academic and behavioral instruction and intervention on student outcomes. Key components of an RtI/MTSS framework include data-based decision making and tiered instruction. This all-day PD session is a continuation of an initial training on RtI/MTSS presented in 2016 and will address: 1) the use of data to evaluate the impact of instruction and interventions across tiers, different demographic groups, and for the school as a whole; and (2) the use of a problem-solving process to develop implement, and evaluate instruction/intervention.

Using Formative Assessment in Early Childhood Response to Intervention Frameworks

Participants will learn about using formative assessment in Early Childhood (EC) Response to Intervention (RtI) frameworks to enhance teaching and learning in early childhood settings. Formative assessment, a key component of RtI, is used to 1) screen all children to identify those needing targeted interventions, and 2) monitor all children’s progress in learning.

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Office of Instructional Support is pleased to announce technical assistance resources to assist middle schools across the State to implement high-quality frameworks of RtI. The NYSED is seeking “Applications of Interest” from public middle schools that are interested in participating in a three year RtI Middle School Demonstration Project.
