Carthage Middle School provides instruction for students in grades 5 through 8 as part of the Carthage Central School District. It is located in the north central part of New York in the foothills of the western Adirondacks and about fifteen miles east of Watertown.

Carthage Middle is considered a rural public school with a student population of about 990 (2015-2016). Approximately 20% of students receive special education services and 51% are classified as economically disadvantaged. Of the 990 students who are enrolled, about 1% are English Language Learners.
