STRAND #21 Teaching Academic Vocabulary Across all Content Areas in Grades 3-8

Dr. Katherine Stahl | September 20-October 25, 2018

Description: The English language contains over half a million words. Facility with academic vocabulary determines comprehension of the content and knowledge acquisition in content-specific subjects (e.g., science, social studies, English language arts). Unfortunately, explicit instruction of academic vocabulary is often overlooked due to time constraints, incorrect assumptions about the need for attention, or because its volume and complexity makes it seem overwhelming. This webinar series will focus on research-based practices for teaching academic vocabulary in Tier 1 upper intermediate and middle school general education classrooms. The content of this webinar will be useful for building academic vocabulary and knowledge acquisition in ALL disciplines or subject areas. The practices will be beneficial to ALL students, especially English Learners, students with learning disabilities, and students from homes with limited economic resources.  Click here for a flyer

Intended Audience: School personnel who are directly responsible for disciplinary instruction in all upper intermediate and middle school content areas (ELA, math, social studies, science), literacy coaches, special education teachers, school administrators, and district literacy curriculum/assessment administrators.
